Now even the influential association of major industries is saying it would be good to raise the sales tax. Well, it is not sustainable to keep it as it is anyway - the next government will not be able to fund the child care allowances in that case.
Raising the sales tax means more than just stress on retirees finances and more money in the government purse, however. It also means something else, at least potentially: Inflation.
Japan has not had inflation in a long time, and it would be welcome for the government and businesesses (although it is doubtful that it would be welcomed by consumers, who get more for their money now). And a tax raise will bring inflation - not because prices actually will go up, but because there will be a rounding error when you raise the tax, and (as the experience from Europe shows, when the Euro was introduced) there is very rarely a downwards rounding. Which means, prices go up but not value, and you get inflation.
