There is an alternative to getting a dividend, and that is living off the capital. If you can save enough money that it will last you, it does not matter if you get a return which is zero. What does matter is if the return is below zero, which can happen if you have inflation even with reasonable interest.
But assuming zero interest and zero inflation, how much money would you need? Let us assume you will live to 85 years of age. Women do on average in many countries, men tend to have shorter lives. And let us still assume you retire at 65. That means you need 2000 times 12times 20 dollars, if you intend to use 2000 dollarper month. Funny, it turns out to be 480000 dollars.
But instead of getting 2000 dollars every month forever, you get 2000 dollars per month during 20 years. Then you are out of money.
In reality, the retirement funds in most countries use a combination, which is why it is a disaster for the Japanese governement that their population is ageing so fast, even though they have a system where you save for retirement in a fund. The assets the fund has to invest in is - bonds. So when people want their money, the fund wants the money back instead of reinvesting it. That is a disaster if you are the governement in a country which funds its national budget by borrowing. Greece ran into the same problem, since they tried to fund salaries by borrowing. This means Japan will havte to raise taxes, the sooner the better.
