Amazon owns the Kindle. When you sell on the Kindle, you can either get little money and set a good price, and set a low price and get royalties at the same level as Apple offers. If you want to make money from the book, this is not very good - it becomes hard to optimize price over income. If you want lots of cheap books on your reader platform, it is perfect. No wonder so many books are priced at less than a dollar.
But that is a race to the bottom. To make money as an author when you price the book at less than a dollar, you have to sell hundreds of thousands of books. If you want to do that, you have to make the book really sensational (or be Steven King). Which means authors will compete in making books more and more sensational. I do not like that, I am a serious writer (and probably rather boring actually). Porn sells well (the bestselling book in the world is a book of erotic stories, after all). But if you are writing about defensive driving, it becomes impossible to include that kind of content. So non-fiction becomes expensive on the Kindle (in particular since most of it is published by companies who have to make money), which means it becomes an enertainment platform just by virtue of the pricing.
You have to admire Amazon, they understand pricing and distribution like nobody else.
