When you are looking for a new job, your qualifications matter. But only until you pass the threshold. Once you get called to the interview, it does not matter particularly which university gave you your degree, and what the profitable products you developed were actually doing. Now, it is all about yourself, and passing the hurdle of becoming a member of the team. Most companies say they want team players, and if they did not, they might as well hire you as a consultant. If you are a high performer but a loner, perhaps that is a role you should consider. It would shield you from being forced to endure discussions about the virtues of your co-workers' children, as well as faking praise for the homemade cake. It would shield you from the coffee breaks as well. Like Henry Ford said, "Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right."
Of course, consultibg can give you lots of freedom, but also lots of worries. You need to set off time to educate yourself so your knowledge is current - otherwise, nobody would pay for it. And you need to charge for that time as well. Lots of hassle.
So if you want to have a job in a company, you had better be good at being social. A company really means company in this context. Socializing is what you are actually going to be doing most of the time. Very few organizations are completely focused on their stated purpose. The need of the people there to interact with each other subverts that, at least part of the time. Marissa Myers of Yahoo had a good reason to bring her creative workers into the office, apart from neing able to fire quite a few slackers. A lot of work, especially the non-standard work, actually takes place when people meet and discuss solutions to problems. That is the fun part of work, and almost impossible to outsource.
If, however, you are looking for a routine job with very little problem solving, look forward to be able to work at home. Data entry, but also roitine administrative tasks, do not have to be done in an office. They can be done from home equally well . That goes for a lot of solution preparation work too, and solution development. It is not by chance that so much IT work has been outsourced to India, and to a lesser extent China. In those countries (maybe not China any more) a few dollars a day is enough to buy you a good life, including a nice condo and meals in restaurants most days. Hard to resist the temptation for an IT manager with a squeezed budget.
As unemployment soars, more people have been looking for work, but very often they are not qualified for those positions which would require you to be in an office. Even as we consume more and more IT services, the dull parts are being outsourced. And if you want to compete as a data entry clerk today, there are people with a fresh education who know much more about data quality and data cleansing than you do, and who would be happy to do it just to secure an income.
What you do not have if you have a fresh education is experience. And if you live in Chennai or Bangalore, you will probably be missing something else that makes your work harder, and the options for handling work tasks much more narrow: cultural background. I remember a colleauge from England complaining about the customer service representatives when he called about a problem: they could not find his address, since it was not where they expected it to be (but a native would have known it instantly, or so he claimed). That kind of knowledge is something you can mot get by studying.
So having a competence, the cultural background to apply it, and experience in using it, is the most important thing in the working life of today. You can show your graduation papers and the stamps in your passport proving that you lived xbroad for a while. But if you do not have any way of proving your experience, what do you do?
