The day the car industry stabbed the oil industry in the back

There was some doubt about the future, until Thursday. When Daimler announced they had bought a part of Tesla to get part of their drive train technology, it was clear. The car industry is abandoning their best ally, and going electric.
Think about it: The car has changed the world, there is no doubt about that. In places planned or designed after the 50's, it is almost impossible to go shopping by walking - unless you can get a ride to the shopping center. The highways, the traffic system, commuting - all of this has changed the way that our world looks like, and the way we think about it.
The oil industry has followed. Gasoline distribution, lubricants, all of this and then the infrastructure that allows them to create plastics, that is on top of the drilling and exploring and supertankers.
But what happens if you only need a tenth of the gasoline you use today? The system gets squeezed from the distribution end (like it has happened with fuel oil for the home). You will not even need a tenth of the gasoline pumps; you could concievably buy gasoline in the same way as you buy cleaning fluid today. And if your car is electric, there is no need for gasoline stands at all.
Perhaps we should be happy that there is a chance that one of the most polluting industries in the world is going away. Cars are never going to be carbon-neutral, even if they are electric, of course; there is too much energy that goes into the manufacture, and even if they were solar-powered and made of wood, the use of energy in making them would make it impossible to make them carbon-neutral.
So it is time to sell the shares in Exxon now. But you can still not buy a care if you care about the environment.
